The incredible series continues to show amazing writing and consistent character work。 Thorfinns storyline is an amazing one as we see a very violent character take the road towards pacifism and not stray from it despite the obstacles placed in his way。 There's also an element of romance being introduced into the series that is refreshing and I hope we get to see more of it。 The incredible series continues to show amazing writing and consistent character work。 Thorfinns storyline is an amazing one as we see a very violent character take the road towards pacifism and not stray from it despite the obstacles placed in his way。 There's also an element of romance being introduced into the series that is refreshing and I hope we get to see more of it。 。。。more

The jokes were still kind of lame, but they were more sparse。 This book was 100% action! The battle over Jomsborg ened very satisfyingly and stayed true to the characters。

What an Brilliant Way Of Connecting all the Storylines all together, AND THAT BATTLE IS JUST 😮‍💨😮‍💨, it Kept Me On My Edge Throughout The Volume! The Baltic War Chapters Have Concluded and It’s Was an Astounding and Thrilling Ride, We Have Been Introduced To Many New Characters, Some Old Characters Joined The Storylines again and The Clash Between All of Them All Was Fun To Read。

As the War in the Baltic continues, Thorfinn has to find a way to get back into Jomsborg to rescue the captured Gudrid, whilst the Jomsvikings are battling each other for leadership, from Thorkell who is always up for war, whilst Floki is willing to shed anyone’s blood so that his young grandson Baldr will lead。The biggest obstacle that Thorfinn has to confront – not just the psychotic charisma of Garm, whom we will speak of – is confronting Floki, the man who orchestrated his father’s assassina As the War in the Baltic continues, Thorfinn has to find a way to get back into Jomsborg to rescue the captured Gudrid, whilst the Jomsvikings are battling each other for leadership, from Thorkell who is always up for war, whilst Floki is willing to shed anyone’s blood so that his young grandson Baldr will lead。The biggest obstacle that Thorfinn has to confront – not just the psychotic charisma of Garm, whom we will speak of – is confronting Floki, the man who orchestrated his father’s assassination。 As he finally locates Gudrid, Floki steps in and confronts Thorfinn, who finally snaps and briefly returns to the vengeful beast from his youth。 Seeing Thorfinn this angry shows an element of horror that Makoto Yukimura isn’t afraid to unleash and at that split moment, Thorfinn is willing to kill Floki, but Baldr manages to step in and break the tension。Later in the volume, Thorfinn is reminded of his late father’s words: “You have no enemies”, and as much as he wants to honour those words, he admits that he can be a challenge。 Those words continue to sum up one of the main themes of Vinland Saga, which is the pointlessness of war, as throughout the volume, not only do we get stunningly illustrated pages of Vikings cleaving one another, but there are a number of scenes featuring minor characters realising the consequences of war。One scene features two soldiers who are about to be executed, one of which wonders if the life of being a Viking was worth it, even if believing being executed will not permit him to enter Valhalla。 Another scene features one soldier is about to die as he waits for the Valkyries to arrive, nothing happens and things just go black, realising that dying in the name of glory wasn’t worth it。 And finally, one scene towards the end feature two soldiers from opposing sides having survived the battle and wonder what exactly they were fighting for。Considering how brutal the story is and I would say projects a message of anti-war, Vinland Saga can still have moments of levity, from Thorkill recreating an iconic scene from Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, to Sugrid and his overweight companion constantly getting sticky situations where they always seem to be on the edge of death。 And then you have Garm, who continues to steal the show with his twisted, witty remarks and thirst to battle Thorfinn。 It eventually leads to one final confrontation between the two, in which Thorfinn remembers a lesson from his old mentor Askeladd to take down his enemies, whilst we get some backstory from Garm, who was revealed to be a troubled child who can only violence as a form of child’s play。Throughout this arc, Thorfinn is forced to confront his past and considering the violent urges still within him, he makes a diplomatic move to end the bloodshed。 There are some obstacles along the way, such as Hild remaining in Thorfinn’s crew, so that she can her vengeance someday, whilst Gudrid expresses her love towards him, much to the chagrin of her husband, Sugrid。 。。。more

Ah, okay, this was better than the last volume。 It’s slightly irritating that these last few volumes have been kind of inconsistent, but you know what, I’m still enjoying the story。 And again, this was a very solid volume。 It was very dramatic, with a lot going on, but very heartfelt as well。 The Jormsborg arc ended up working out well, at the end, and I liked how the dynamics between the characters progressed, and what that affected, both internally and externally。 What happens next, I’m excite Ah, okay, this was better than the last volume。 It’s slightly irritating that these last few volumes have been kind of inconsistent, but you know what, I’m still enjoying the story。 And again, this was a very solid volume。 It was very dramatic, with a lot going on, but very heartfelt as well。 The Jormsborg arc ended up working out well, at the end, and I liked how the dynamics between the characters progressed, and what that affected, both internally and externally。 What happens next, I’m excited to see。 。。。more

O tanto que eu amo essa série, caras。 Desenvolvimento sensacional de personagem e é simplesmente incrível como o autor cria os conflitos baseados na dificuldade do Thorfinn de não praticar a violência。 Genial!

I have been reading fiction about this time period lately。 I started watching the anime and really got into it。 So, I decided to start reading the Manga that picked up where the anime stopped (I know the manga came first)。 I had never been able to enjoy Manga before these books。 Reading backwards was a big chore for me, not so with these。 I really liked them

The culmination of the Baltic war。 It was an amazing storyline with some critical decisions, particularly for Thorfinn。 I can't praise enough the writing of this series, it is not perfect but the connections with past key moments are greatly appreciated。 5/5Waiting eagerly for the next one。 The culmination of the Baltic war。 It was an amazing storyline with some critical decisions, particularly for Thorfinn。 I can't praise enough the writing of this series, it is not perfect but the connections with past key moments are greatly appreciated。 5/5Waiting eagerly for the next one。 。。。more

All war and no peace makes Thorkell an excited boy。Wow。 These War in the Baltic chapters just keep going as this book reaching the 36th part as Floki has to deal with the culmination of all of his machinations up to this point。 What starts as a rescue operation becomes a book full of action, moral questions, political upheaval, at least one love confession, an interesting mutant child (how did you manage that one Floki), and a fantastic homage to the classic movie the Shining。 Thorfinn will once All war and no peace makes Thorkell an excited boy。Wow。 These War in the Baltic chapters just keep going as this book reaching the 36th part as Floki has to deal with the culmination of all of his machinations up to this point。 What starts as a rescue operation becomes a book full of action, moral questions, political upheaval, at least one love confession, an interesting mutant child (how did you manage that one Floki), and a fantastic homage to the classic movie the Shining。 Thorfinn will once again fight for his life as he continues to tread the line between pacifism and the deadly past he is trying to leave behind。 Even if people want him to be the new chieftain of the Jomsvikings。 This series continues to put out great stories mixed with emotions, gore, and questions about what is right and wrong in a world where violence and greed prevail。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Most of this volume is mediocre like the last, but at least Torfinn and gang are making progress again, or at least I hope so for the next volume。 Thorkell has grown on me quite a bit as the series has progressed and so I’m glad that he was featured heavily in this volume。 Also his reaction to Gudrid’s love confession was great, just a kid at heart。 I was a little dissatisfied with the closing of the Jonesborg mini-saga, because it seems like Torfinn was able to weasel his way out of killing aga Most of this volume is mediocre like the last, but at least Torfinn and gang are making progress again, or at least I hope so for the next volume。 Thorkell has grown on me quite a bit as the series has progressed and so I’m glad that he was featured heavily in this volume。 Also his reaction to Gudrid’s love confession was great, just a kid at heart。 I was a little dissatisfied with the closing of the Jonesborg mini-saga, because it seems like Torfinn was able to weasel his way out of killing again, but it was also cool seeing him holding back from killing Floki。 His fight with Garm is cool as well, and I’m excited to see how he and Gudrid develop。 。。。more

Why oh Why does this have to be the last volume currently out in the US! I binged the newest 7 volumes thinking that perhaps the series was over。 Now I find out its in the middle and I have to wait for the next US version to come out :( :( Great series, the storyline is really emphasizing Thorfinn's growth as a pacifist, and the intrepid band he is gathering。 Why oh Why does this have to be the last volume currently out in the US! Quick recap: It is the age of Vikings。 Thorfinn Thorsson, once a warrior single-mindedly focused on vengeance, now pursues a path of peace。 His trading expedition has been interrupted by war in the Baltic Sea between factions of the fierce Jomsviking raiders。 Thorfinn wants nothing to do with it, but it turns out that he has a rightful claim to the title of chief of the Jomsvikings。 And one of his crew is still captive inside Floki’s fortress。Note: This review contains SPOILERS for previous volu Quick recap: It is the age of Vikings。 Thorfinn Thorsson, once a warrior single-mindedly focused on vengeance, now pursues a path of peace。 His trading expedition has been interrupted by war in the Baltic Sea between factions of the fierce Jomsviking raiders。 Thorfinn wants nothing to do with it, but it turns out that he has a rightful claim to the title of chief of the Jomsvikings。 And one of his crew is still captive inside Floki’s fortress。Note: This review contains SPOILERS for previous volumes, you may want to read earlier reviews if you are reading about the series for the first time。Naturally, when Thorfinn learns that Gudrid is still captive, he decides to go back through the secret passage to rescue her。 Hild chooses to go with him, both because she also cares about Gudrid, and also to fulfill her pledge to kill Thorfinn should he break his vow not to slay humans。 Sigurd is tasked by the besieging general to secretly follow Thorfinn to discover the secret passage and infiltrate the fortress。 Sigurd agrees because this also gives him a chance to rescue Gudrid, his lawful wife。Gudrid is relatively safe, being disguised as a servant in the quarters of Baldr, Floki’s grandson and the other claimant to the chiefhood。 But that won’t protect her for long, and she needs to escape。 Baldr wants to help her, but the lad has his own problems to deal with。Thorfinn’s pacifistic ways are put to the test, as he must face not only the bloodthirsty spear specialist Garm, but the wily Floki, on whose orders Askeladd murdered Thorfinn’s father。Many scenes of gory violence are leavened with dark humor and quiet moments (even in the midst of battle) where characters muse on the meaning of life and death。Sigurd gets to show that he’s a competent and brave warrior when he’s not afflicted with his usual bad luck, though he’s certainly not in Garm’s league。 And Thorkell finally gets to fight someone bigger than he is!The art continues to be very good, with plenty of authentic detail。The exploration of Thorfinn’s character continues, showing both the weaknesses and strengths of his new way of life。 We get a bit of background on Garm, who is very much a character type based on the Icelandic sagas; the kid you do not want to play “war” with because he doesn’t understand the concept of “pretend。”Content note: As mentioned, a lot of gory violence。 Slavery comes up just long enough for those particular slaves to be freed。Overall, another strong volume in a superior series。 Still highly recommended。 。。。more

SuperbOnce again, Yukimura subverts my expectations and cranks out a beautiful mix of histrocial fiction, action, drama and even comedy。 A violent series such as VS doesn't get enough credit in the comedy it's able to pump out。 Even the comedy (outside of the shining reference which I'll even admit had me dying) most of the comedy is totally within the realms of the time period。 I love it。 It's my favorite series。 SuperbOnce again, Yukimura subverts my expectations and cranks out a beautiful mix of histrocial fiction, action, drama and even comedy。 A violent series such as VS doesn't get enough credit in the comedy it's able to pump out。 Even the comedy (outside of the shining reference which I'll even admit had me dying) most of the comedy is totally within the realms of the time period。 I love it。 It's my favorite series。 。。。more

Pacifist Thorfinn Karlsefni feels the same way, spending a good chunk of this volume dueling unarmed against the spear-wielding psycho assassin named Garm。 And that fight is the least violent one to occur in the battle to take the fortress of Jomsborg。Despite all the gore, this outing is actually one of the more humorous in the series thanks to Thorkell the Tall's larger-than-life personality and the slapstick bum luck of spurned hubby and aspiring war hero Sigurd。Great series! So unhappy I have to wait months until the next installment! 。。。more

Thorfinn and his enormous crew take on Floki and his enormous crew in the battle for Jomsborg。 It's all very exciting, as Vinland Saga always is, with plenty of humor (Sigurd running through the battle in a barrel!) and pathos。 It's also far too populated with side characters whose reason for being I've long forgotten。 For example, Thorfinn has a rooftop brawl with Garm who is。。。a super talented spear guy? And the leader of the anti-Floki clan is a mysterious dude with a nice goatee?
